We were delighted to hear that HMP Frankland was successful in being allocated copies of H G Wells ‘The War of the Worlds’.

We are fortunate to have Prof Simon James (from Durham University) attend our monthly Reading Group. One of our first Book Club meetings with Simon was to discuss ‘The Time Machine’ by H G Wells, this was hugely popular. His research interests are late Victoria and Edwardian fiction. He was the editor of the Wellsian, the scholarly journal of the HG Wells Society and has curated an exhibition of HG Wells books and manuscripts for the University of Illinois along with organizing an exhibition two summers ago at Durham’s Palace Green. As a result we are holding a themed HG Wells day in the library and I will draw on Simon’s research for some creative ideas. We’ve got the Art Class creating eye-catching posters and plan to have the soundtrack to The War of the Worlds film playing on the day. In addition we’ll be handing out quizzes and crosswords.

We’re looking forward to it!
