Dr Dan Byrne-Smith, senior lecturer in Fine Art Theory on BA Fine Art, will be performing an illustrated presentation on the history of undersea worlds in science fiction. From Jules Verne’s submarine adventures in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Arthur C Clarke’s vision of undersea farming in The Deep Range, to the arrival of aliens off the coast of Nigeria in Nnedi Okorafar’s Lagoon, oceans have been the setting for authors to conjure profound and imaginative visions. To accompany the images and texts exploring this history, Dan will be creating an ambient soundscape to create an immersive and atmospheric encounter. Dan is currently the Horniman Museum Art, Design and Natural History Fellow, a role that brings together his lifelong love of science fiction, museums and natural history.
